Qualcomm Next Flagship SoC : Support the AV1 Video Codec

The AV1 video codec will be supported by Qualcomm’s next flagship SoC. YouTube and Netflix have already employed the AV1 video codec to increase the bandwidth efficiency of high-quality video. The report says Qualcomm’s “upcoming flagship Snapdragon mobile processor”—model number “SM8550″—will support AV1. That would probably be called the “Snapdragon 8 Gen 2” SoC, due out in 2023. Here we will feature news on Qualcomm Next Flagship SoC : Support the AV1 Video Codec which is one of the top news of this week.

However, unlike Samsung’s Exynos flagship SoCs in 2021-2022, Qualcomm’s chips do not have native support for decoding AV1 video. The good news is that Qualcomm will catch up in 2023 and include AV1 decoding in its top-of-the-line processor. According to the source, the SM8550 chip is the first to use the technology.

The model code for the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 CPU is SM8450. As a result, it’s safe to assume that we’re talking about the Snapdragon 8Gen 2. Samsung claims that the Exynos 2100 and Exynos 2200’s AV1 decoding provides for longer playback time while streaming Netflix or YouTube material.

AV1, or aAOMedia Video 1,’ is a royalty-free, open coding standard for sending video over the Internet. Unlike Samsung’s Exynos flagship SoCs from 2021 and 2022, Qualcomm’s current chips do not allow native decoding of AV1 movies. The new AV1 codec compresses data more efficiently than H.265 and so enables for faster streaming while using less data. It’s also more battery-friendly.

Although AV1 is becoming more popular for internet streaming and media consumption, only a few streaming providers now encode some of their content in this format. It’s a new codec that promises to improve compression efficiency by 20% and 50% over its more well-known equivalents VP9 and H.264, respectively. As a result, greater resolutions and fewer file sizes may be possible. Netflix streams select titles in AV1 if the service’s data saving option is set on, while YouTube streams selected videos encoded in AV1 on specific Android TV devices.
